Engert, B. Dick Title: The UV absorption spectrum of the phenyl radical isolated in solid argon Journal/Source: Applied Physics B Lasers and Optics, 63 (5), 531-535, (1996) Data: diagram Energy/Wavelength range: 25000 - 45000 cm-1 (~ 222 - 400 nm) Resolution: Temperature: 12 K Temperature dependence: no Pressure/Concentration: Phase: matrix (Ar) pH: Comments: The UV spectrum was obtained in the wavenumber range 25000 - 45000 cm-1. It shows sharp lines at 25220, 33880, and 34820 cm-1 and 2 broader maxima at 38360 and 41060 cm-1. The peak extinction coefficient of the absorption line at 25220 cm-1 (396.5 nm) can be estimated to be epsilon(396.5nm) ~ 700 l mol-1 cm-1. The sharp lines at 33880 cm-1 (295.1 nm) and 34820 cm-1 (287.2 nm) have almost the same extinction coefficient of epsilon(295 nm) ~ epsilon(287 nm) ~ 1500 l mol-1 cm-1. Pers. Comm. B. Dick: Subsequent experimental results from other groups showed that the obtained uv spectrum must be assigned to the phenoxy radical and not to the phenyl radical.
